Description
William Barton Rogers (1804-1882), US geologist and founder of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Rogers founded MIT in Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA, in 1861. It opened in 1865, and he became its first president. He had begun his studies in geology in 1833, working with his brother on the geology of the Appalachian mountains. He also published on the geology of Virginia. From 1835 to 1853, he taught natural philosophy at the University of Virginia. He then moved to Boston to pursue his educational plans, which culminated in the founding of MIT. Photographed between 1865 and 1880.
