Detail from the judgement of Ani. The ibis-headed Thoth, the scribe of the gods, holds a scribe's palette and a reed brush to record the result of Ani's trial. Behind Thoth is the the goddess Ammit ready to devour Ani's heart if he fails the test. She is depicted with the head of a crocodile, the torso of a leopard and the hindquarters of a hippopotamus. From the ''Book of the Dead, the Papyrus of Ani, Egypt (c.1275 BC) which consists of a number of magic spells assisting a dead person's journey through the underworld into the afterlife.
