Description
This statue is an early work by the sculptor, painter and architect Michelangelo Buonarroti (1475-1564) completed around 1497. It is of Bacchus, the Roman god of wine, agriculture and fertility (the equivalent to the Greek god of wine Dionysus). His reeling pose with a goblet of wine in his right hand shows his intoxication. Behind him on his left is a faun, half man, half goat. The plump, rounded flesh of the statue gives a sense of the androgyny associated with Bacchus.
