Star spectra. Diagram of the spectra of stars, showing a set of dark absorption lines known as Fraunhofer lines. The spectrum is shown ranging from blue (left) to red (right). The absorption lines indicate the presence of certain elements in the atmosphere. From the following stars (and spectral types), top to bottom: Lambda Cephei (O6), P Cygni (B2e), Beta Orionis (B8), Alpha Canis Majoris (A1), Alpha Canis Minoris (F5), Alpha Aurigae (G8), Alpha Hydrae (K3), Alpha Orionis (M2), Omicron Ceti (M7), and Y Canum Venaticorum (Carbon star).
