Description
Solar spectrum. This shows the range of visible light emitted from the Sun. At bottom left is the shortest wavelength visible, around 400 nanometres (nm). Wavelength increases from left to right along each strip, and from bottom to top. The longest wavelength visible is at top right, at 700nm. The dark lines are Fraunhofer absorption lines. These are due to emitted light being absorbed by gases, mainly in the Sun's atmosphere. Image taken by the McMath- Pierce Solar Facility at Kitt Peak National Observatory, Arizona, USA.
