Description
Plutonion at Eleusis, Greece. Eleusis was the site of the Eleusinian Mysteries and the birthplace of Aeschylus. The site is probably built on top of a cave which emits toxic gases such as carbon dioxide, hence its use as a ritual passage to the underworld. Ritual animal sacrifices might have been performed at the site.
