Description
Parthenon, illustration. The Parthenon was built in the hill-top citadel of the Acropolis in Athens, Greece, from 447-438 BC. It is a Doric temple dedicated to the Ancient Greek goddess of wisdom, Athena (statue of Athena Parthenos inside the temple, holding Victory, a shield and spear; with the serpent Erichthonius). Eight columns by seventeen, the building was 70 by 30 metres and 14 metres tall. The roof had overlapping marble tiles. In turn a Christian church and a Turkish mosque, it was finally used as a gunpowder store before being reduced to ruins when the Venetians bombarded the Acropolis in 1687. Doric refers to the architectural style of the columns.
