Description
Optical image of the Eagle Nebula (M16, NGC 6611) in the constellation of Serpens. Some 5900 light years away, M16 is a cloud of interstellar dust & gas, mainly hydrogen, which is ionised & lit up by the ultraviolet radiation of a cluster of young, hot stars. To the north, the bright nebula is sharply bounded by a cool dusty region. The image was obtained by superimposing three unsharp masked" photographs taken at different wavelengths using the UK Schmidt Telescope in Australia."
