Description
Eagle Nebula, composite image. Combined optical and infrared image of the Eagle Nebula (M16, NGC 6611). The Eagle Nebula is an emission nebula, a huge cloud of gas and dust that glows as the hydrogen it contains is ionised by radiation from the hot young stars that have formed within it. The Eagle Nebula is around 7000 light years from Earth, in the constellation of Serpens Cauda. This image uses data from the Digitized Sky Survey 2. Image released in April 2015.
