Description
Optical CCD image of the interacting galaxies Arp 297 A & C, also known as NGC 5754. The galaxies are located about 200 million light years away in the constellation of Bootes. The companion (Arp 297 C, left) may be responsible for enhancing the grand design" spiral pattern of the main galaxy (Arp 297 A) by tidal effcts. A third galaxy (out of the picture) also seems to be involved in the interaction. Arp 297 C shows enhanced levels of recent star formation. The picture is a false- colour display of a red-light image obtained with a CCD (charge-coupled device) camera mounted on the 2. 1-metre telescope of the Kitt Peak National Observatory, Arizona. Some technical details are given in Kennicutt et al, ASTRON. J. 93, 1011 (1987)"
