Description
Galaxy cluster Abell 520, combined X-ray and visible light image. This cluster formed from the collision of several smaller galaxy clusters, and this image shows the effect on the intergalactic gas of the collision. The galaxies themselves (all across the image) are small on this scale, and were observed in visible light using the Canada-France-Hawaii and Subaru telescopes. The highest concentration of mass, observed by gravitational lensing measurements with these telescopes, is blue. The heated gas emitting X-rays is red, and was observed using the space-based Chandra X-ray Observatory (CXO). Abell 520 is some 2.4 billion light years from Earth, in the constellation of Orion. Image published in 2007.
