Hubble Space Telescope image of part of the Andromeda Galaxy (M31, NGC 224). This panoramic image captures a 61,000 light-year-long swathe of the galaxy in unprecedented detail, revealing individual stars. At 2.2 million light years away, M31 is the closest major galaxy to our own Milky Way and is the largest member of our Local Group of galaxies. It is a spiral galaxy with an overall diameter of 150,000 light years.
