Description
Visible light image of the NGC 7457 galaxy, made by the Wide Field and Planetary Camera of the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) on 17 August 1990. This low-contrast image shows the core of the galaxy, with an unexpectedly high concentration of stars toward the centre. NGC 7457 was the first 'normal' galaxy to be studied using the HST, and is at a distance of 40 million light years from Earth. This and similar images have revealed an immense concentration of stars in this galaxy's nucleus, some 400 times more densely populated than previous Earth-based observations had suggested. Compare with SPL Ref. R820/159.
