Description
Loading a particle accelerator. Physicist loading lead source material, used to create heavy ions, into the LINAC 3 linear particle accelerator at CERN (the European particle physics laboratory) near Geneva, Switzerland. LINAC 3 is a preaccelerator for the large hadron collider (LHC). Experiments switched from proton-proton to lead ion collisions at CERN in November 2010. Lead ion collisions are expected to produce quark-gluon plasma, a primordial state of matter thought to have been present in the Universe microseconds after the Big Bang.
