Description
Variation of the cosmological constant. Diagram showing the variation in the properties of the universe with curvature (K) and the cosmological constant (lambda symbol). The situation with no cosmological constant is highlighted in blue. Three of the models are named: the Lemaitre model is at lower right (Lem); the Lemaitre-Eddington model is to its left (L-Edd); and the middle model of the blue ones is the Einstein-de Sitter model (E-dS). Each of the models shows the evolution of the universe from creation to its predicted end. The curved models at left are closed universes that expand and then contract again. The models that increase in size indefinitely are open universes. These models are based on the Friedmann equations.
