Description
Before tsunami. Image 1 of 2. Ikonos satellite image of an industrial port, south of Banda Aceh, Aceh province, Sumatra, Indonesia. An industrial plant, a pier and forest are seen. This image was taken on 10 January 2003. On 26 December 2004 there was an underwater earthquake, the largest for 40 years, between the Eurasian and Australian plates off the coast of Indonesia. Shockwaves from this created huge waves, or tsunamis, which devastated surrounding coastlines. The death toll in Indonesia alone is in excess of 100,000. For an image of the coast after the tsunami, see image E275/029.
