Description
Hurricane Wilma approaching the north east tip of Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula, on 21 October 2005. Different colours show wind speed: grey is 0 moving through blue, yellow and red to purple. White barbs show areas of heavy rainfall. Wilma made landfall on the Yucatan Peninsula on 21 October as a category 4 hurricane, with sustained winds of over 240 kilometres per hour. It exited the peninsula on the 23 October, after subjecting some parts of the peninsula to hurricane winds for well over 24 hours. Wilma caused devastation along coastal tourist areas and cost at least 6 lives. Image taken by NASA's QuickSCAT satellite.
