Description
After tsunami. Image 2 of 2. Ikonos satellite image of part of the northern coast of Aceh province, Sumatra, Indonesia. This image was taken on 29 December 2004. On 26 December 2004 there was an underwater earthquake, the largest for 40 years, between the Eurasian and Australian plates off the coast of Indonesia. Shockwaves from this created huge waves, or tsunamis, which devastated surrounding coastlines. The brown areas were previously covered in lush green vegetation and crops. The death toll in Indonesia alone is in excess of 100,000. For an image of the coast before the tsunami, see image E275/024.
