Description
First World War medical treatment. Injured Scottish soldier having his wounds dressed at a medical station in Belgium during the First World War (1914-1918). This medical station was on a British-held area of the Western Front, and the soldier was injured during a battle on the Menin Road in 1914. There were several battles fought in the region of the Menin Road. The one in 1914 was part of the First Battle of Ypres. The British and French forces defeated the Germans, but both sides eventually set up trenchworks and fortifications, completing the line of trenches that stretched across Belgium and northern France for the next 4 years. Around 58,000 British soldiers were killed or wounded in the First Battle of Ypres.
