Description
Vertol VZ-2 aircraft on a runway. Also known as Model 76, this aircraft was a tilt-wing VTOL (vertical take-off and landing) aircraft, seen here with NASA and US Army and US Navy markings. The wings are designed to tilt (as seen here) to allow the rotors to lift the aircraft the way they would on a helicopter. Once airborne, the wings tilt back to face forward. This aircraft first flew on 13 August 1957, and was retired in 1965. Developed by the Vertol company (later Boeing Vertol), this aircraft was 8 metres long, and could carry a pilot and one passenger. Photographed at Langley Research Center, Virginia, USA, on 15 November 1962.
