Description
Fermilab grounds. Elevated view from the Robert Rathbun Wilson Hall, Fermilab, showing landscaped grounds to the north-east of the building. Fermilab, the US National Accelerator Laboratory, founded in 1967, is located in Batavia, Illinois, USA. The Fermilab campus area covers over 25 square kilometres. Parts of the grounds are being allowed to revert to their natural prairie state. The avenue seen here is where particles from the Tevatron accelerator are fired underground at close to the speed of light to collide with fixed targets. Part of the ring of the Tevatron is at top right. Particles detected at Fermilab include the top and bottom quarks, and the tau neutrino.
