Description
Linac. View of the interior of the Linear Accelerator (Linac) at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (Fermilab) near Chicago, USA. The Linac takes protons from a pre- accelerator at an energy of 750 electronvolts and accelerates them to an energy of 400 million electron volts. The cylindrical structures are drift tubes, These contain electrodes which create varying electric fields within the accelerator. These electric fields give the protons a repetitive series of electrical kicks to accelerate the protons. Photographed in 1995.
