Ear of barley. Barley (Hordeum sp.) is a widely cultivated cereal crop which has many different varieties and forms. It is grown for human and animal consumption as it contains a high percentage of carbohydrate, a considerable quantity of protein, some fats and some vitamins. One of its primary uses is as an ingredient in malt beverages, especially in the brewing of beer.
