Description
Cereal and rape crop. Large fields of an unripe cereal crop (in foreground) and a flowering rape crop (Brassica napus). Cereals are the world's leading crop and are used to make bread, flour, beer and animal feed. The foliage of rape is used to make animal feed whilst the seeds are used to make an oil used for cooking, lubrication and in the manufacture of soap. Both of these crops are a cause of hay fever; cereals release large amounts of airborne pollen and rape produces a pollen to which hay fever sufferers are particularly vulnerable. Large fields are designed to ease the harvesting of the crop by mechanical means.
