Description
Colossus of Rhodes with a ship, 16th century artwork. This vast bronze statue of the Greek sun god Helios, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, stood at the entrance to the harbour at Rhodes, a Greek island in the Aegean Sea. The statue, completed in 282 BC, was 33 metres tall. It was destroyed 56 years later in an earthquake. This is a woodcut from Cosmographie de Levant (1556), an account of travels in Asia, Greece, Palestine and Egypt by the French writer and explorer Andre Thevet (1502-1590).
