Bromination of phenol. Phenol (or hydroxybenzene, C6H5OH) after addition of bromine water, forming a white suspension of 2, 4, 6-tribromophenol (C6H2Br3OH). The product is used in the manufacture of flame retardant materials, and in pharmaceutical preparations as an antiseptic.
