Description
Blocked femoral artery. Coloured angiogram (arterial X-ray) of a blockage (centre right) in the femoral artery (yellow) of a leg. Blood flow stops towards the bottom of the femur (thigh bone). This may be caused by thrombosis, abnormal blood clotting, or an embolism. An embolism is due to an embolus, a fragment of material or a bubble of gas. The blockage of the artery may cause pain and tissue death. The angiogram was produced by injecting a radio-opaque dye into the bloodstream.
