Description
Kidney angiogram. Coloured angiogram showing the arteries that supply blood to the kidneys. The kidneys appear yellow and arteries red. The renal arteries, which supply each kidney, branch off the abdominal aorta, which runs down the centre of the picture. Spinal vertebrae are visible in the background and several ribs appear at the top. An angiogram is made by taking an X-ray after injecting the patient with a contrast medium (a substance opaque to X-rays). The technique is used to look for diseases of blood vessels, such as aneurysm (ballooning of an artery) or atherosclerosis (fatty deposits inside an artery).
