Description
Alien planet. Artwork of the surface of a hypothetical moon of an extrasolar planet orbiting the Sun-like star HD 38529. The planet is seen on the horizon, encircled by thin rings. HD 38529 (upper left) lies 140 light years from Earth in the constellation Orion. In July 2000 it was found to have a planet orbiting 19 million kilometres from the star in just over 14 days. The data also suggested the presence of a large planet further out, depicted here. The moon's surface shows crevasses and ridges similar to those seen on Jupiter's moon Europa. Such extrasolar planets are detected by observing the wobble they impart on their star's motion through space.
