Bone growth, light micrograph from a section of vertebral column. Cartilage at the bottom of the image is being calcified to form trabecular bone (red). Bone marrow surrounds the trabeculae. This is known as ossification. This process is complex in the vertebral column with numerous centres of ossification. Magnification: X 200 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
