Description
Bones of the torso and neck, computer artwork. At centre is the spine. The cervical (neck) spine is blue, the thoracic (upper) spine is green and the lumbar (lower) spine is orange. The spinal column is made up of vertebrae, block-like bones that protect the spinal cord and support the upper body. The ribcage is made up of twelve pairs of curved bones that attach to the thoracic spine at the back and the sternum (breastbone) at the front. The large triangular bone at the base of the spine is the sacrum, with the coccyx (tailbone) below that. Either side of the sacrum are the large ear-shaped hip bones.
