Description
Seismic fault in Iceland. A fault line is a region of the Earth's crust where two plates of rock move relative to each other. Where the two plates are moving away from one another at a divergent boundary, a crack or fissure is created in the surface of the Earth called a rift. In Iceland, the rift is created by the separation of the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates. These plates are moving away from one another at the rate of 2 centimetres per year.
