Description
Aerial photograph of a view north-east across the San Andreas fault, in the region of the Carrizo Plain, approximately 450km (300 miles) south of San Francisco & 160km (100 miles) north of Los Angeles. The fault, which extends almost the full length of California & is responsible for major earthquakes, appears as the narrow scar running from left to right in centre of the photo. The stream in centre has been displaced 130 meters. The group of small gulches at right are offset from between 9.5 and 12.5 meters, as a result of past earthquakes, notably one in 1857.
