Description
First World War munitions factory. Male and female workers moving explosive shells in a storage area at an English munitions factory during the First World War (1914-1918). Huge numbers of artillery shells were used in the trench warfare on the Western Front, killing millions on all sides but failing to break the stalemate. Constant production of new shells was needed to meet demand, and women entered the workforce in large numbers to replace the men who had been conscripted into the army to fight. After the war, this social change aided the campaign for increased rights for women. Photographed in 1918.
