Description
Archaeological work at Ancient Sparta. Theatre terrace under reconstruction in 2022. The view is from the stage left seating of the amphitheater looking towards the stage right. The new terraces on the left conform to a process called anastylosis, an archaeological term for a reconstruction technique whereby a ruined building or monument is restored using the original architectural elements to the greatest degree possible, combined with modern materials if necessary, ensuring that the latter are unobtrusive while clearly recognizable as replacement materials. Ancient Greek theatre was a theatrical culture that flourished in ancient Greece from 700 BC. Ancient Sparta has over 2 millenia been plundered for its building materials for the nearby modern city of Sparti.
