Description
Alexander Carr-Saunders (1886-1966), British sociologist. Carr-Saunders studied at Eton and then at the University of Oxford, graduating in zoology. After studying law he returned to zoology after the First World War. An Oxford University expedition to the Arctic prompted work on population dynamics. This resulted in 'The Population Problem' (1922), a book that built on earlier work by Malthus and Galton. Carr-Saunders was Professor of Social Science at Liverpool from 1923 and Director of the London School of Economics from 1937 to 1955. An honorary fellow of Peterhouse College, Cambridge, He was knighted in 1946 and made KBE (Knight Commander) in 1957. Photographed circa 1962, in Cambridge, UK.
