June 1st 1829. Freeman notes this is Charles Darwin's first published work, the modest citation 'Graphiphora plecta. Cambridge" - C. Darwin, Esq'. From Stephens, Illustrations of British entomology, Haustellata, Volume II, p. 200, 1829. Plate illustation from that work of members of the Graphiphora moth genus (now Ochropleura) with original colouring. Darwin citation is superimposed clipping. As Freeman notes this record is given in quotation marks, and therefore scientifically represents a genuine publication by Darwin in a book. Darwin later noted in his autobiographies that the appearance of his name as an authority in this work for the first time brought him tremendous satisfaction as a young man - he was still a student at Cambridge madly in love with entomological collecting. The modern scientific name of this moth is Ochropleura plecta, the flame shoulder moth (not illustrated)."
