Wilson and Hartwell in group portrait. US zoologist and geneticist Edmund Beecher Wilson (1856-1939) and US physical educator pioneer Edward Mussey Hartwell (1850-1922) with six other men in a formal group portrait. Hartwell, a medical student with a doctorate in biology from Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, USA, was appointed Director of the Gymnasium at Johns Hopkins University from 1882, having been a doctoral student there in 1880. He obtained his medical degree in 1882. Wilson obtained his doctorate, also in biology and also at Johns Hopkins University, in 1881.
