William Osler at Oxford University, 1907. Canadian physician William Osler (1849-1919) at his desk in Oxford, UK. Osler began his career at McGill University, Montreal, Canada, before becoming the first professor of medicine (1889) at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine in Baltimore, USA. In 1905 he became Regius Professor of Medicine at Oxford University. Considered the father of modern medicine, he contributed towards reforms of medical education, founding the practice of residency where students received training in hospitals. His 'Principles and Practice of Medicine' (1892) was a standard textbook for forty years. Photographed in 1907.
