Description
Colour image of the Earth, made at a distance of 2.1 million km by the Galileo spacecraft in December 1990 during a gravity-assist flyby. This was the first of 500 frames taken over a 25-hour period to create the Galileo Earth Spin Movie, showing the rotation of Earth and the dynamics of its weather system. Antarctica is seen at the bottom of the frame, with the continent of South America in the centre. Galileo has performed many science experiments during its flybys of Earth and Venus on its way to Jupiter. On arrival in 1995, Galileo will deploy a probe into the Jovian atmosphere before entering orbit around the giant planet.
