Description
Simulated natural colour Voyager image of a region near the south pole of Jupiter's moom Io. At bottom right is Haemus Mons; the south pole lies just to the top right of this. Several dark calderas (volcanic craters) can be seen. The caldera with the black lava floor (left of centre), 100 km across, is Creidne Patera. To the lower left is a dark lava flow that has a bright halo of sulphur dioxide snow. The spider-like volcano on the left of the photo is Maasaw Patera and at top right is a large bright-haloed plain called Lerna Regio. The complex land forms are caused by volcanic flows, deposits and subsidence.
