Description
Voyager 2 photograph of Ganymede, the largest of Jupiter's moons. The large, dark, almost circular feature is about 3200 km in diameter; it is criss- crossed by narrow, closely-spaced, light bands. The bright spots on Ganymede's surface are relatively recent impact craters. The light, branching bands are ridged & grooved terrain & are younger than the more heavily cratered dark regions. Ganymede is about one & a half times the size of our own Moon, but only about half as dense. It is composed of about 50% water or ice and 50% rock. The picture was taken on July 7, 1979, from a range of 1.2 million km.
