Description
Voyager 2 image of Io. Io is one of the four Galilean moons of Jupiter, orbiting the planet at a distance of 421,000 kilometres. This visible light image was taken at a distance of 250,000 kilometres by the Voyager 2 spacecraft in 1979. The surface is very red in appearance, probably due to large deposits of sulphur. The brighter patch at top left is caused by reflections from pale sulphur dioxide frost. Just above centre is a heart-shaped feature, at the centre of which is a large volcano, Pele. Evidence of extensive volcanism was found on Io, and some eruptions were observed in progress by the two Voyager spacecraft.
