Description
The surface of Io, Jupiter's innermost Galilean satellite, photographed on March 5, 1979, from a range of 128,500 kilometres by the Voyager 1 spacecraft. The area of the picture is about 1000 km by 800 km. The red & orange colour of the surface is probably due to deposits of sulphur compounds, salts & possibly other volcanic sublimates. The dark spot at bottom with the irregular radiating pattern is probably a volcanic crater with radiating lava flows. The two Voyager spacecraft found numerous volcanos on Io, including a number observed in the process of eruption.
