Description
Virginia opossum (Didelphis virginiana) sitting in a tree. The virginia opossum is a solitary nocturnal animal native to Central and North America. It mainly inhabits woodlands but is also found in almost all other habitats. It has a long scaly prehensile tail and can reach lengths of 90 centimetres. It is an omnivore, feeding mostly on insects, carrion and berries. When threatened it plays dead, entering a catatonic state where its body goes limp and its breathing becomes almost undetectable. The virginia opossum is the only marsupial native to the USA.
