Description
Venus of Holhe Fels, Stone Age figurine. This mammoth ivory figurine was found in 2008 in the Hohle Fels cave near Schelklingen, Germany. It dates from around 40,000 to 50,000 years ago, during the Upper Paleolithic. Venus figurines are prehistoric statuette female figures that have similar features, with anatomical exaggerations. This example has a carved loop protrusion in place of its head. Venus figurines are among the earliest known examples of prehistoric art, and the Venus of Holhe Fels is among the oldest yet discovered. This is a replica of the original artefact.
