Description
Cave painting. Historical artwork of prehistoric artists designing a cave painting at what is now the Lascaux caves, France. The painting is being done by the light of primitive oil lamps, and a wooden platform has been erected in order to paint near to the cave ceiling. This and other paintings at Lascaux were painted by Cro-Magnon man about 17,000 years ago. This was done with yellow and red ochre mixed with animal fat. It was blown on to the cave wall through a reed (as seen here). It is believed animals like these were painted to give hunters magical powers and ensure a successful hunt.
