Description
Megalithic monument. 18th-century artwork of the megalithic monument and ruins uncovered on the island of Jersey in 1785. Thought at the time to be a temple for the druids, these standing stones were found when the local militia levelled a hill ('Mont de la Ville') near St Helier, Jersey. The stones were later presented to the governor of Jersey, Henry Seymour Conway, and re-erected at his estate at Park Place, Remenham, Berkshire, UK. This artwork accompanied a description by a Mr Molseworth. Published in Volume 8 (1787) of 'Archaeologia', the journal of the Society of Antiquaries of London.
