Tight junction in the small intestine, fluorescent light micrograph. Fluorescent dyes have been used to highlight cellular structures and proteins: actin (green), cell nuclei (blue). A tight junction is a type of join between cells, here formed by the protein occludin between epithelial cells in the jejunum, part of the small intestines. The larger structures seen here are villi, the functional structures lining the walls of the intestines, and the cell nuclei are part of the columnar epithelium that forms the shape of each villus. Actin is a protein that is a major part of a cell's cytoskeleton. This is the filamentous form, known as f-actin.
