Description
Testicular torsion, illustration. The testicle (testis) at right (the left-hand testicle) has been affected by torsion (twisting) of the spermatic cord. The arterial supply and venous drainage of the testis pass down the spermatic cord, which runs from the abdomen to the testicle. This cord is liable to twist, causing compression of the thin walled veins and obstruction of venous drainage. This can lead to tissue death (necrosis) due to a lack of oxygen.
